Meet Rajkot Rose

Better than a bouquet. Our Rajkot Rose is grown in the arid climate of northern Gujarat where the thorny bushes bloom under the year round sunshine of India’s western coast. We source from the first farmer in the region to farm roses while most neighboring farms grow peanuts. Farming on a small 14-acre plot of land, his green thumb has garnered recognition from the Gujarat government. His roses are planted alongside marigolds and wheatgrass, which provide stable income to send his kids to school and hire a small crew of 12-14 farmworkers to harvest and dry the petals.

Every three months, the flower heads are harvested by hand and the petals are carefully plucked and dried when they are in peak bloom to preserve their deep ruby hues and keeps their perfume intact. Knowing when to harvest is crucial to rose farming because the flower’s scent production happens in tandem with the plant’s development. As it matures, the flower produces volatile compounds called terpenes that each lend a note to the complex aromatic symphony of roses.
