Not Your Commodity Cardamom

Our cardamom is special. Here's why
Not Your Commodity Cardamom

Our Cardamom comes from the cloud forests of Santa Barbára in northwest Honduras. This plant thrives in the misty mountainous region with cool temperatures and continuous cloud cover. Once ripe, the pods are carefully harvested and dried to preserve the seeds inside. We source directly from a single farm owned by Don Jesús, whose first cardamom harvest represents a shift away from intensive coffee farming to biodiverse crops, including banana and timber, that help feed the soil and sustain local communities.

Botanical name: Elettaria cardamomum

Origin: Angostura and El Temblor, Honduras

Harvest month: March 2024

Processing: Hand harvested, oven dried

Farm type: Single farm

Agroforestry cultivation. Cardamom flourishes in high altitude forests where ours is farmed. Loamy soil rich in nutritious organic matter provides ideal drainage for healthy plant development while forest shade keeps the climate stable and protects plants from harsh weather.

Nature’s irrigation system. The cloud forest gets its name from the near constant cloud cover hovering above the tree canopy. This ecosystem is uniquely fed by moisture in the air from water vapor, helping to naturally irrigate the crops growing below.

Traceable sourcing. We work closely with one farm where all of our cardamom is grown. By sourcing directly from a single farmer, we are able to trace each harvest and maintain freshness from the forest floor to our tea factory in Brooklyn.

Bigger seeds, better flavor. Our jumbo variety of cardamom is distinguished by extra large seeds bursting with fruity notes and bold aromatics. The plants are grown alongside fruiting trees and coffee plants, which increase regional biodiversity and contribute complex flavor characteristics.
